Ethics in the Workplace
Using Internships and Practicums to Learn about Moral Values in the Real World

Part of fulfilling Taylor’s mission of preparing students as servant leaders includes the development of moral character and getting them ready to face the ethical issues that they will face as they take on leadership roles in the world. One part of preparing students for the work that they will do is the use of internships and practicums. Those experiences offer an opportunity for students to interact with people in the working world about their moral values and the role they play in the workplace.

To take full advantage of that opportunity students need to engage in conversation about moral values with those that they interact with during internships and practicums. The Center for Ethics would like to help facilitate that interaction by suggesting a series of questions that can serve as examples of questions students could ask to initiate such conversations. Not all the questions would apply to every situation and there are other questions that could serve the same purpose.

As a starting point the following questions are recommended:

1. How do your moral values impact your work?
2. What are the moral values that apply most to what you do?
3. What are the most common moral problems that you see in your workplace?
4. How do you handle a situation in which something is being done that you think is wrong?
5. What values led you to choose your career?
6. How do you determine what is right and wrong?
7. How does Biblical knowledge inform your workplace decisions?
8. How can we get to know scripture well enough to be able to use biblical concepts to make workplace decisions?
9. How do professional codes of ethics and workplace regulations impact how you think about what is right to do?
10. How does this organization practice, reinforce or encourage ethical behaviors within its workforce and culture?
